Social Media

Social media, connecting us all via the internet.  It is something that is making the world more accessible and in a sense smaller as we all tend to know even the most minor of details from someone's life or the news that is being transmitted from the farthest reaches of the earth.  Obviously, the big facilitors and most popular applications being facebook and twitter.  But in other parts of the world they use social media sites like orkut to reach the same ends.  Using these in classroom can be beneficial because it allows people to exchange information quickly and with great brevity.  It is a novel way in which to communicate and can be accessed at all hours of the day, therefore the convenience factor is extremely high.

It would seem doubtful that social media will lose its influence and force in the near future, and as such it should be embraced and utlitized for its assets while it is present and in vogue.  I am sure someone will eventually manufacture something that will usurp facebook or twitter a few years down the road, but as of right now I cannot think of it and am not going to be that millionaire, so I will teach.

  1. Totally make the world more accessible and smaller as we know it. Definitely the convenience factor comes to play, as students can access these medias anytime and pretty much from anywhere. And yes as it seems doubtful these social media applications are going to lose steam or cease to exist any time forseeable, they should be embraced and utilized. And I think when educators are embracing them and recognizing them for their potential we will see them being used more frequently as learning tools.

  2. I do think that social media has a place in the education system. I do think that it key to education students on how to use it correctly. One big problem for social media in the classroom is the most sites are blocked in schools. I think that social media has a few bumps to jump over before it is accepted by all educators. Overall if social media is used in a meaningful way and is not abused, it will be a powerful learning tool.

Great comment there brody, i agree Social media whether it's using facebook, twitter, or a blog, is a great way for people (students) to exchange info quickly, and a great way for students to connect outside of the classroom.
Like we have talked in the past, learning is not contained within the four walls of the classroom, with todays technology students can work and learn together inside and out of the class.
